FAQs
What exactly is Pilates? Where did it come from? Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. Being a sickly child, he devoted his life studying how to improve his own physical health. Upon studying gymnastics, bodybuilding, diving and martial arts he began to create his own system of exercise. He continued to develop his methodology collaborating with dance and yoga experts.
Although Pilates methods were originally used with law enforcement officers and the rehabilitation community, they were quickly adopted by the dance community upon his immigration to the USA.
Modern day Pilates as we know it has evolved however, its roots remain true and it's principles/fundamental exercises remain the same.
What are the principles behind the Pilates method?
Pilates exercises are designed to increase core strength and balances the muscles around the joints, improving the way your body functions, looks and feels.
Pilates was founded around 6 distinct elements:
Centering, Concentration, Control
Precision, Breath and Flow
On top of these elements, we also focus on the five basic principles of STOTT Pilates:
• Breathing
• Pelvic placement
• Ribcage placement
• Scapular movement
• Head and cervical spine placement
I've never done Pilates before, how do I start?
All new clients to Infinite Fitness will receive an introductory session. In this session your instructor will review your goals, conduct a postural assessment, teach you how to integrate the 5 basic principles and review some fundamental exercises. From here your instructor will also recommend what options/classes would be most appropriate to you.
What should I wear to class? What do I need to bring?
Wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict your movement. Clothing should be snug so that your instructor is able to see your body placement and lines.
You will need a yoga or pilates mat and are welcome to bring your own from home or rent one from us. We also have some of the best pilates mats on the market available for purchase.
Bring a water bottle from home, we do have a water cooler available to fill it as needed.
Are classes drop-in or do I need to register?
All of our Pilates reformer classes and Pre & Post-Natal classes are registered. There are some mat classes that are drop-in. Please call us for more information and to reserve your spot.
Is your studio co-ed?
