Loving the Fiber!

WOW – regularity!

After being on the shakes for almost 2 weeks, I honestly think one of my favourite features of the shake is the 5g of fiber per serving. I’ll be honest with you, my fiber intake was nothing I really paid much attention to it. I understood I needed to eat it and that it was good for me, but I found it difficult to get my 20-30 grams a day. I googled what it would take to eat 30 grams of fiber every day and here’s the sample meal plan that came up:

Meal Food Fiber
Breakfast Whole wheat English Muffin (Trader Joe’s Brand) 5 grams
1/2 pink grape fruit 1 gram
Snack Apple 3 grams
1 serving multi-grain pretzels 3 grams
Lunch 4 oz. baby carrots 2 grams
One cup of cooked kale 2.6 grams
3/4 cup whole wheat penne pasta 5 grams
Dinner Roasted pork loin 0 grams
1 cup roasted yams 5.3 grams
3 ounces roasted pearl onions 1 gram
2 cups chopped romaine 2 grams
1/2 ounce dried cranberries .7 grams
1 ounce chopped walnuts 1.9 grams
TOTAL FIBER INTAKE 32.5 grams

Upon first glance, I would say that looks totally do-able. And yes, it is do-able BUT how many of us actually eat like this, on a daily basis!! Plus not to mention, the above meal plan is high in fiber but appears to be lacking in protein and calcium. Drinking 2 of my bodybyvi shakes everyday, made with milk and fruit allows me to get to my reccommended 20 grams of daily fiber.

So why is fiber so important?

Fiber has many overall health benefits ranging from assisting with weight loss to improving overall health. Just some of these benefits include:

  • help you to feel full longer.
  • prevent a small portion of the calories ingested from being absorbed.
  • helps prevent heart disease.
  • reduces LDL (bad cholesterol).
  • enhances immunity.
  • helps to decrease risk of colon cancer (and possibly, cancer of the esophagus).
  • prevents constipation and helps to ease symptoms of intestinal diseases such as IBS.
  • helps to decrease risk and manage symptoms of type II diabetes.

The importance of fiber can not be overlooked and if you can get your recommended daily allowance from foods currently in your diet, then do it. But if you feel as though you may be lacking, supplementing with a well balanced meal replacement shake, such as the 90 Day Challenge, may be a great option for you!
